Nicotine pouches are a smoke-free alternative to continued smoking.
Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco. Usually, they contain nicotine extracted directly from a tobacco plant and flavourings.
How Do Nicotine Pouches Work?
Nicotine pouches are consumed orally by placing a nicotine pouch between the upper lip and gums, while the duration of the nicotine experience is about 30 minutes. Being an oral product, the use of nicotine pouches does not involve combustion. The absence of combustion is one key reason why an adult smoker might switch to a smoke-free product, such as nicotine pouches. Nicotine pouches do not produce smoke or ash.
Are Nicotine Pouches Risk-Free?
No, nicotine pouches are not risk-free and contain nicotine, which is addictive. The best decision any adult smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. Smoke-free products are not designed as cessation aids and are not alternatives to quitting.
Nicotine Pouches Compared to Snus and Chewing Tobacco
As nicotine pouches belong in the oral smokeless category, adult users may confuse them with snus and chewing tobacco. Both chewing tobacco and snus are products that are also used orally, and they often come in portions, too. However, despite the similarities, some key differences set the products apart.
In the case of snus, the biggest difference is the presence of tobacco. Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco, whereas snus does. Subsequently, the dominant flavour in snus is tobacco, and there is generally less flavour variety found in snus compared to nicotine pouches.
It is important to understand snus and chewing tobacco are not risk-free, and they contain nicotine, which is addictive.
It should be noted that in the Republic of Serbia, as well as in many European countries, the sale and import of snus are prohibited.
