Nicotine is an addictive substance first identified within the tobacco plant during the 1820s.
Since then, researchers have thoroughly analyzed this substance and determined that it poses a risk to adult users. However, contrary to popular misconception, nicotine is not the most harmful factor in a cigarette.
The greatest risk for adult smokers comes from tobacco smoke produced by combustion, as it generates thousands of harmful carcinogenic substances and compounds.
Despite this, it is important to note that nicotine is not risk-free and it is addictive.
Where Does Nicotine Come From?
Nicotine is a substance found in the tobacco plant, a member of the “Nightshade” family of plants. This family of plants includes common household fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers.
Although these foods contain nicotine, the levels are significantly lower than in products developed with nicotine.
Nicotine in Smoke-Free Alternatives
Nicotine is usually present in some smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes. While addictive and certainly not risk-free, as mentioned, nicotine is not the most harmful factor in a cigarette.
With this information, an adult smoker might be interested in switching from cigarettes to a smoke-free alternative. Heated tobacco products are one type of smoke-free alternative. These products heat the tobacco instead of burning it. Similar to cigarettes, tobacco heating systems provide nicotine but without combustion and many of the harmful chemicals produced during this process. Of course, this should be substantiated on a product-by-product basis.
Alternatively, vapes provide a different option for adult smokers. Vapes, also known as e-cigarettes, typically use e-liquid that, when vapourised, delivers vapour instead of smoke, meaning there is no combustion. Of course, the absence of combustion should be substantiated on a product-by-product basis. Depending on the brand, adult smokers can choose from various e-liquid flavours. Nicotine is often found in e-liquids, along with vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and flavorings.
